Student Member Grade

A Student member must carry at least 50% of a normal full-time academic program as a registered undergraduate or graduate student in a regular course of study in IEEE-designated fields. The total cumulative period for a member to hold the Student member grade and/or the Graduate Student member grade is limited to eight years.

Student members, upon graduation or upon reaching the eight-year limit (whichever occurs first), with a baccalaureate or higher degree (or its equivalent) from an accredited institution in an IEEE-designated field will be transferred automatically to member grade.

Student members outside of the IEEE-designated fields, upon graduation or upon reaching the eight-year limit (whichever occurs first), will be transferred to Associate member grade.

Member Resources

IEEE membership offers access to technical innovation, cutting-edge information, networking opportunities, and exclusive member benefits. Members support IEEE's mission to advance technology for humanity and the profession, while memberships build a platform to introduce careers in technology to students around the world.

IEEE membership enhances every stage of your career. Whether you are an established professional or just starting out, IEEE membership identifies you as superior talent. Advancing your member grade can bring added peer recognition to your accomplishments. Grade advancement is encouraged because it is required, in most cases, for key volunteer positions at the IEEE.

  3. Appointing chairs of student branches, student chapters, and student affinity groups is ILLEGAL according to IEEE Constitution and Bylaws.
  4. All student elections have to be documented and performed via vTools. Student Activities Coordinator (SAC) and Section Student Representative (SSR) should be always informed about the election process and election results. Emails can be found in this link.
  5. A detailed description for the student branch Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer can be found in this link.
  6. A Student Branch Counselor should have an ACTIVE IEEE membership and serves as an adviser to the branch and is appointed by the local Section Chair, upon the recommendation of the Student Members and the Regional SAC Chair (RSAC), and serves with the approval of the Department Head of the university or faculty where the branch is established. The appointment (or reappointment) is normally for two years.
  7. A Student Branch Counselor should assist students with the development of their Annual Plan NOT planning on behalf of them. A Student Branch is meant to be managed by students and the counselor is meant to advise the students. 10. As the student community is dynamic, the student chapter / affinity group member strength may vary every year and it is the responsibility of Student Chapter / Affinity Group Advisor to instigate interest in new students and make them join the society / affinity group. This is a continuous process every year. The growth and strength of a student chapter / affinity group over the years depend on the Student Chapter / Affinity Group Advisor. All the communications made by chapter / affinity group chair to any entity need to be copied to the advisor.
